NAACP honors Carmen Charles, Mark Rosenthal

Units of the NAACP recently honored Carmen Charles, president of the Municipal Hospital Employees Union Local 420, and Mark Rosenthal, treasurer of District Council 37 and president of Motor Vehicle Operators Local 983.

Ms. Charles received the 2003 Annual Freedom Leadership Award June 6 from the New York branch. With DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts at her side, Branch President Dr. Annie B. Martin presented the plaque lauding Ms. Charles, “For her praiseworthy and effective labors for liberty and justice for all workers as the struggle continues.”

Mr. Rosenthal received his award May 9 at the annual luncheon of the NAACP’s Housing Authority branch. Branch President Robyn Little presented the plaque. Joining her on the dais were Hazel N. Dukes, president of the NAACP’s New York State Conference, Queens City Council member James Saunders, and a group of DC 37 local presidents.

The branch cited him for rallying members “to file complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission when allegations of entrenched racial bias in promotions scandalized the Parks Dept.” and praised his efforts to prevent abuse of workfare workers and provide real city jobs for former welfare recipients in the Job Opportunity Program.
