Local 1407 helps
members prep for key civil service test Hundreds
of city workers are enrolled in a Local 1407 course to prepare for the Associate
Accountant civil service exam in October. The local designed the eight-session
course with the support of the DC 37 Education Fund and pressed the city to hold
the exam as part of its effort to help members move up the civil service career
ladder. A key goal of the course is to help members in provisional status move
into permanent positions, which offer greater job security and contractual rights.
Five years ago, 70 percent of our members were provisionals, and now
that number has fallen to 25 percent, said Local 1407 President Maf Misbah
Uddin, who is also DC 37s treasurer, at the opening day of the class Sept.
