Fashion show at Caribbean Jump Up
Following
the festive traditions of the Caribbean, DC 37s own Caribbean Heritage Committee
held its fifth annual Jump Up Aug. 28 at union headquarters.
Helping
to kick off the tropical party was the evenings special invited guest, Nick
Perry, a state Assembly member from Brooklyn. Its a real honor to
be here and celebrate our Caribbean traditions with everyone tonight, said
Perry, who was introduced by Committee Chair Carmen Charles, the president of
Municipal Hospital Employees Union Local 420.
The island-inspired party
featured members dressed up in colorful, sequined costumes with feathered headdresses
dancing to the pulsating beat of calypso and soca music provided by a DJ.
Were
getting ready for the Caribbean Day parade, said Charles. Union members
who come from Caribbean backgrounds work very hard in the hospitals and at other
city jobs, and this is an opportunity for us all to come together and enjoy a
well deserved celebration Caribbean style.
