College awards for Local 299 students

Local 299 presented college scholarship awards to four graduating high school students who are children and grandchildren of members at its May 26 membership meeting.

The winners of the Rev. Mychal F. Judge Memorial Scholarships are Samuel D. Cook (who will be attending Johns Hopkins University), Laprincella LeGrand (Virginia State), Symone Lopez (Borough of Manhattan Community College) and Britney Elise Mercer (Morgan State University).

"Father Mike," as Judge was known, was a Local 299 member and Chaplain, who served the men and women of the Fire Dept. for nine years.

On Sept. 11, 2001, he bravely rushed into the burning north tower of the World Trade Center to aid injured first responders. As he was administering the last rites to a severely injured Firefighter, falling debris from the collapsing building killed him.

"These scholarships are Local 299's way of honoring Father Mike's legacy and helping our young people to further their education," said Local President Jackie Rowe-Adams. "I believe Father Mike would really appreciate that."
