Members contribute over $10,000 toward flood relief efforts in Pakistan

After the worst flooding in Pakistan's history, the DC 37 community rallied to the aid of the stricken population with contributions totaling over $10,000. Members, officers, local leaders and staff gave generously to the relief effort, and the DC 37 Asian Heritage Committee presented the union's check and a list of contributors to A.S. Babar Hashmi, the Consul General of Pakistan, on Aug. 23.

"Our prayers are with those affected by the flood and with you in your work on their behalf," said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts in a message to Hashmi.

Roberts had asked locals, members and staff to help "these suffering people who are facing an overwhelming national disaster." More than 2,000 people have been killed and 21 million are injured or homeless, and the risks of disease and contaminated drinking water threaten the lives of survivors.

The United Nations estimates emergency relief costs at $460 million.

Roberts said that as additional contributions come in, she will forward them to the Consulate General's office. Checks should be made payable to the "Prime Minister's Flood Relief Fund 2010" and sent to Executive Office, District Council 37, 125 Barclay St., Room 525, New York, NY 10007.
