Local 299 scholarships honor Father Mychal F. Judge, killed on 9/11

Local 299 recently presented its Father Mychal Judge Memorial Scholarships to five children of members: Rabiul A. Arref, Tyrell Belle, Shyasia Howard, Erica Little and Alana Mann.

The local named the $1,000 academic awards after the Fire Dept. Chaplain who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001. Father Judge, a Roman Catholic priest, was a member of Local 299, which represents city Chaplains of all faiths.

When Judge heard the World Trade Center had been hit, he rushed to the site. After giving victims the last rites, he was praying for the rescuers, the injured and the dead when he was killed by falling debris in the lobby of the north tower.

Firefighters carried his body to nearby St. Peter's Church.

"Through these scholarships we honor Father Judge and keep his name alive," said Local 299 President Jackie Rowe- Adams.
