UNION SCRAPBOOK
A "Woman of Distinction"

Local 2627 member Mary Lane was one of the 22 honorees Aug. 11 as New York State Assembly member Tom McKevitt (17th A.D.) hosted the sixth annual Women of Distinction awards ceremony. The award goes to "women whose work has enriched the lives of everyone in our community, whose contributions too often go unnoticed," said McKevitt.

The New Hyde Park resident and mother of two was nominated by her daughter Melissa for her volunteer work. Lane, a Business Analyst and Project Manager, is a computer software specialist at the Finance Dept.

"I've volunteered for most of my life," she said. Starting as an arts and crafts teacher for a summer church program, she became its director and developed it from 50 to over 200 children in one year. As coordinator of the Special Needs Program, she helped children of all disabilities. She set up a program for older singles to socialize and volunteer by visiting hospitalized war veterans and making breakfast for families at the Ronald McDonald House.
