Election 2013
Activists rally for Public Advocate candidate James

DC 37 activists joined union and community leaders for a noontime rally on the steps of City Hall on Sept. 19. in support of Brooklyn City Council member Letitia James, who was facing off against Daniel Squadron on Oct. 1 in a runoff election for Public Advocate.

"There is so much more that needs to be done, like equal pay for equal work," said James, who plans to use the office of the public advocate to fight for equity in government.

James was joined by several of her colleagues from the City Council.

"If you want someone to fight longer and harder, then you want Letitia James," said Council member Rosie Mendez.

"Our government must look like the people that we serve," said City Council member Melissa Mark-Viverito, who won her primary election.

If James defeats Squadron in the Oct. 1 runoff and wins the general election on Nov. 5, she will become the first African American woman to hold a citywide office.
