Union set for November election

DC 37 has endorsed five Democratic Party candidates for the upcoming general election being held Tues. Nov. 3.

Those candidates are Roxanne Persaud in the 19th Senatorial District, Pamela Harris in the 46th Assembly District, Alicia Hyndman in the 29th Assembly District, Barry Grodenchik in his City Council race to represent the 23rd District in Queens, and former Staten Island Congress member Michael McMahon for district attorney.

McMahon also served in the City Council where he represented the North Shore and from 2009 to 2011 he served in Congress.

“These five candidates are the kind of leaders our members need in Albany and the City Council,” said DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. “They will work together with us to improve the lives of our members at work and in the community.”

Persaud is running to replace former Senator John Sampson; the Brooklyn district includes Canarsie, East New York, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Flatlands and portions of Gravesend. Persaud lives in Canarsie and has had a long history as a community activist.

Harris, a veteran community activist from Coney Island, is running to replace Assemblyman Alex Brook-Krasny. The 46th Assembly District which she seeks to represent includes Coney Island and Bay Ridge.

Grodenchik is a former Assembly member and a life-long resident of Queens. He won a hotly contested primary election in September and is seeking to replace Mark Weprin. The district includes Glen Oaks, Oakland Gardens, Fresh Meadows and Floral Park.

Hyndman ran unopposed in her primary race to represent the 29th State Assembly District in Southeast Queens. The seat was left vacant by the resignation of Bill Scarborough. Hyndman is the former president of Community Education Council 29 and a long time resident of Laurelton.
