Crespo and Wells win Municipal Labor Committee positions

DC 37 local leaders Santos Crespo and Anthony Wells were elected Sept. 21 as vice chairs of the Steering Committee of the Municipal Labor Committee, which includes most of the unions of New York City employees.

Crespo, president of Dept. of Education Employees Local 372, and Wells, president of Social Service Employees Union Local 371, were among four candidates who ran for three vice chair positions on the committee in September.

Two of the vacancies were left by former Local 372 President Veronica Montgomery-Costa and former Local 371 President Faye Moore.

"I look forward to being on the leadership team at the MLC," Crespo said.

"In these tough times, with unions under severe attack, we need to be unified and strong and think outside of the box."

Wells also noted that public-service unions expect difficult years ahead as governments cut budgets. He urged an aggressive defense of municipal services, a long tradition in Local 371, and called energizing the rank-and-file a priority.
