Edited by ALFREDO ALVARADO Members walk for cancer awareness Local 420 President and DC 37 Health and Wellness Committee Chair Carmen Charles led the union's contingent of breast cancer survivors and supporters from locals 420 and 1549 at the annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk in Central Park on Oct. 19. The members and staffers, in union green sweatshirts with the Makings Stride pink logo, supported the annual American Cancer Society walk. The event raises awareness about cancer and it raises funds for breast cancer research and support services like transportation and counseling for women in treatment. The Breast Cancer Awareness campaign promotes early detection, diagnosis and treatment and urges monthly self-examination and annual mammography, along with maintaining a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise, Charles said.
