Henry Garrido receives civic award

DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido was awarded the first Civic Champion award by the magazine City Limits during their gala 40th anniversary event in downtown Manhattan.

City Limits Editor Jarrett Murphy presented the award to Garrido for his long-term service to the labor movement and his tenure as leader of the city's largest municipal employees union. Garrido was introduced by Queens City Council member and Finance Committee chair Julissa Ferreras-Copeland.

Since the end of 2014, when he replaced now-retired Executive Director Lillian Roberts, Garrido has led DC 37 through a successful contract campaign at the City University of New York, and was instrumental in creating an ongoing organizing campaign that increased the union's membership to 125,000 members. Under his leadership, DC 37 has won important budget victories with both the city and state.

City Limits was founded in 1976 as a newsletter resource for housing activists. Over the decades, the publication evolved into a magazine noted for its investigative journalism and in 1996, City Limits founded the Center for an Urban Future, a research institute.
