Part 4 of a series on prescription drug costs
Mail-order mandatory Jan. 1

After you mail your prescription to CFI Mail Service Pharmacy, it is reviewed for possible drug interactions based on your health profile. Once approved, a licensed pharmacist fills the description. Your prescription is double-checked for accuracy. Your medication is packaged in a plain, weather-resistant pouch for your privacy and protection. Your medication is delivered free to your home.

Retirees’ HIP/VIP changes canceled
In other benefit news, medication for retirees in the HIP VIP Premier Medicare Plan will continue to be covered by the DC 37 Health and Security Plan.
Because of the likely inconvenience and confusion caused by a proposal to switch coverage for the first $500 to $1,000 of annual drug expenditures to HIP/VIP, the DC 37 plan decided to scrap the change, Ms. Esperon said. In November, the plan announced that the change would be implemented in January.

The DC 37 Health and Security Plan’s mail-order program will become mandatory on Jan. 1 for participants who are prescribed maintenance drugs. The plan decided to make the program mandatory as it tries to curb expenditures on prescription drugs, which continue to eat up a growing portion of its spending on welfare fund benefits.

Under the mail-order benefit, participants are charged a lower co-payment than they would pay at a neighborhood pharmacy. Shipping is free.

Using the CFI Mail Service Pharmacy offers the following benefits:

  • Prescription are delivered directly to your home with free shipping
  • You can speak with a pharmacist anytime, day or night
  • You can order refills by phone (800-223-7139) or online (www.cfipharmacy.com)
  • You get up to a 90-day supply of your medications (which means fewer refills and pharmacy visits).

To have your prescriptions delivered to your home, you should have your doctor write a prescription for up to a 90-day supply of your medication. You complete a mail service order form included with a postage-free envelope. Insert the prescription and payment and then send it off to CFI. You may obtain the envelope by visiting the plan at union headquarters at 125 Barclay St. or by calling 212-815-1531.

Participants who don’t take the initiative to sign up for the mail-order program will be permitted to fill their prescription for maintenance drugs three times at their pharmacy. But on the fourth time, the pharmacy will flag the order and the participant will be advised to use the mail service.

Getting your prescriptions delivered at home is as easy as mailing a letter. Send the prescription signed by your doctor with a completed mail-order form in a postage-paid envelope to CFI, which is the mail-order pharmacy of the DC 37 Health and Security Plan’s prescription drug administrator, NPA, which is affiliated with Express Scripts.

The mail-order program offers:

  • Convenience
Prescriptions are delivered to your home within 10 to 14 days with free delivery.
Refills are available by mail or by phone or online.
  • Safe and Personal Attention
Your prescription is double-checked for accuracy.
Registered pharmacists are available to answer your questions anytime.
