Coping with the student debt crisis

DC 37 continues addressing the growing problem of college debt by offering members student debt clinics.

The union, together with the non-profit group Jobs for Justice and AFSCME Next Wave activists, started offering the sessions in September. More than 400 members have signed up and members expect to save a monthly average of $314 on their college loans through programs that help students lower their payments.

The clinics have looked at repayment plans, such as the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, to help lessen the financial burden faced by borrowers.

Clinics were held at union headquarters on Nov. 21 and 23; additional sessions will be scheduled in 2016.

Interested members can check the union's website at www.dc37.net and click on the student debt counseling link for dates and times of upcoming clinics.
