DC 37 made the holidays brighter for hundreds of union families
who celebrated Diwali, Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa at union
headquarters and with individual locals throughout the city.
DC 37 is a family of many religions, said Executive
Director Lillian Roberts. And we come together to celebrate
our cultures and draw strength and greatness from our diversity.
Ancient festivals of light were celebrated as Local 375 observed
Diwali, and the Jewish Heritage Committee lit menorah candles
in remembrance of the Maccabees victory for religious
freedom 19 centuries ago. The Womens Committee decorated
a Christmas Wish tree with gift suggestions for children with
special needs, and Santa, who resembled Local 1320 President
Jim Tucciarelli, made a special visit to DC 37 children Dec.
10 at the annual DC 37 Holiday Giving party coordinated by the
Housing Committee, PSU and MELS. Families being helped through
PSU and MELS received toys and clothing bought by the presidents
of Locals 1070, 1320, 1455, 2054, and other DC 37 locals contributed
funds to buy childrens gifts for the event.
Local 299 went on a shopping spree, buying
toys and clothing for needy children in three New York City
public hospitals. Juvenile center employees in Local 1457 made
the holidays happier with a childrens party at the union
hall Sat. Dec. 7. Hundreds of other union members have shared
their love and generosity with co-workers, families, neighbors
and the citys less fortunate.
As we enter a new year, there remains much work to be done.
DC 37 will continue to safeguard and improve the rights and
working conditions of its members. The union faces challenges
in the months ahead. Members the unknown heroes who make
New York City run deserve dignity and respect in the
workplace and DC 37 will continue its struggle for economic
and social justice. During this holiday season, the DC 37 family
wishes you and yours the best for a peaceful and healthy 2003.
