Local 768 trains its shop stewards

Thirty members of Health Services Employees Local 768 recently completed an intensive five-week Shop Steward activist training course, “Building Union Power in the Workplace,” that began Nov. 6 at DC 37. Among the many topics included in the course were “Introduction to Grievance Handling,” “Documenting a Case,” “Developing Member Action Teams,” and “Moving Members to Action.” Other important subjects were effective strategies for handling grievances, communication among members and a review of union history.

AFSCME Eastern Regional Director Yolanda Medina, Professional Division Director Stephanie Velez, Assistant Director Hector Coto and Council Rep Audrey McConney and Larry Kelly from the DC 37 Education Fund were among the union staffers who coordinated the training course and ran the workshops.

“We did this to improve our ability to provide better services for our members,” said Local President Darryl Ramsey. “ Due to the success of this training course, we will be offering an advanced session starting around the end of January,” Ramsey said.
