Unionists join fight against AIDS

“Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise,” was the theme of this year’s World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts (front, center) joined with activists to support this goal. In photo, Roberts is at center, surrounded by AIDS activists, with women’s Committee Chair Walthene Primus, top left, and DC 37 Treasurer Maf Misbah Uddin at her side. Members of the HIV/AIDS Committee, under the auspices of the Women’s Committee, distributed up-to-date medical information, condoms, and a host of educational materials to members passing through the union lobby.

Meanwhile, the Global AIDS Alliance used theoccasion to condemn the U.S. governmentfor its paltry financial contributions to fighting the worldwide pandemic. The United Nations predicts that 2.9 million people will die of AIDS in the coming year and 380,000 of them will be children. “World AIDS Day is a time to renew our commitment to fight andto prevent this terrible disease,” said Roberts.
