Over 40 Local 1407 members enroll in prep class

Members of Accountants, Statisticians and Actuaries Local 1407 recently took free test preparation classes for the Accountant exam.

The District Council 37 Education Fund organized the classes and held them on six evenings in November and December at the Manhattan campus of St. John’s University, across the street from union headquarters.

An average of 41 members participated in each of the sessions, which prepared them to take the civil service test for the Accountant title, which the Dept. of Citywide Administrative Services gave on Saturday, Dec. 12.

Local 1407 President and DC 37 Treasurer Maf Misbah Uddin has focused his efforts on encouraging as many members of the local as possible to take the exam and said he was very encouraged by the number of members who registered for the class.

“Back in 2000, as many as 70 percent of the members were provisional employees, and especially since the Long Beach court decision, we needed to improve that significantly,” said Uddin.

“I’m very happy to report that our efforts have been successful, and now that number is all the way down to 20 percent. The next step will be to get it down to zero.”

Members who are interested in attending future test preparation classes should contact the local.
