Honors galore for Carmen Flores
Community organizations have been lining up to honor Local 1549 Recording Secretary Carmen Flores.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Flores is a member of the New York League of Puerto Rican Women. In August, the League named her Woman Labor Leader of the Year. Her outstanding contributions as a woman labor leader also earned her a Certificate of Special Recognition from U.S. Congress member Steve Israel. And Nassau County honored Flores with a citation for her contributions to the enhancement of the region and the betterment of its residents.
Flores is a constant fixture at Local 1549 and DC 37 events - a perpetual-motion machine at work on behalf of her fellow union members. She has served as a vice chapter chair for her co-workers at the Administration for Children's Services. She co-chairs the DC 37 Latino Heritage Committee and serves on the local's Communications and Next Wave committees. As a community activist, she has worked to register voters and fought for the rights of tenants.
"I'm very humbled to receive these awards," Flores said. "I'm dedicated to what I do and I wouldn't have it any other way. This is what I love to do - to help people improve the quality of life for everybody."
