Edited by Alfredo Alvarado Dr. King's legacy is honored The union's Political Action Committee held their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration with invited guest and keynote speaker Public Advocate Letitia James. James said, "Unless Americans address the violence and mass shootings plaguing our nation, and until we tackle issues like poverty, unemployment and failing schools, "Dr. King's dream is a dream deferred." In 2014 James became the first woman of color to win a citywide election. She also served on the City Council from 2004-2013 where she fought for paid sick leave and affordable housing. The annual MLK celebration ended with the traditional lighting of candles and the singing of the civil rights anthem "We Shall Over Come." Political Action Committee Chair Dennis Ifill was the master of ceremonies for the celebration which took place Jan. 14 at union headquarters. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
