Black
History Month 2001 at DC 37 in February will have special significance, according
to organizers.
This year, DC 37 celebrates 20 years of Black History
which is the theme of our month-long celebration, said Sherwyn Britton,
who co-chairs the unions Black History Committee with Cynthia Chin-Marshall.
The strains of live jazz will accompany the Feb. 1 opening ceremony, while
an African marketplace will spice up the Feb. 23 finale. Throughout
the month, DC 37 locals and committees will hold their own Black History Month
events honoring the rich cultural, social and political legacy of people of African
descent. Family Day on Feb. 3 will offer health screenings by nurses
in Local 436 as well as workshops, arts, crafts and games for members and their
children.
Sponsors of the Black History Month programs, in addition to
DC 37, include Locals 154, 371, 372, 375, 420, 768, 957, 983, 1070, 1320,
1407, 1549, 1597, 1655 and 2627, as well as the Womens Committee, Political
Action Committee and Black History Committee.
