DC 37s Black History Committee
invites all DC 37 members to celebrate the vast contributions Africans
have made to America at its annual Black History Month event. Lest
We Forget is the theme for the monthlong celebration that begins
with a ribbon cutting on opening night Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the
lobby of union headquarters and Rooms 3 and 4.
Also that evening, U. S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia will read from
his book, Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement,
and sign copies that will be for sale. The event is co-sponsored by
NYC Custodial Employees Local 1597 and the Authors Talk Committee
of the DC 37 Education Fund.
On exhibit at 125 Barclay St. will be a collection of rare first edition
books by African American authors, original art by contemporary African
American artist Burnus McKnight, and photographs and other Black memorabilia
and artifacts.
On Saturday, Feb. 8 the committee will host Family Day with games,
face painting, arts and crafts for children, as well as workshops
for kids and adults. And vendors will have interesting art, posters,
books and other items that reflect Black culture for sale. Refreshments
and entertainment will be provided. Registration for this event starts
at 9 a.m. in Room 1 and activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All DC 37 members and their families are welcome.
The Political Action Committee marks Black History Month with a celebration
in Room 1 featuring Bronx Assemblyman Carl Heastie as guest speaker.
The Black History committee will conclude its 22nd annual celebration
with a Finale on Friday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. Refreshments and entertainment
will be provided for all union members and their families.
