People person of the month
Cynthia Cox
Computer Associate
Although Cynthia Cox, a Human Resources Administration employee
since 1968, will retire from her job on Feb. 25, shell continue
to work for PEOPLE
and her union, DC 37.
I think PEOPLE does good by supporting candidates who support our
concerns, said Cox, a Computer Associate Level 2 who is a Local
2627 member. PEOPLE lets us know whats really happening in
politics and helps us empower ourselves.
PEOPLE, Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality, is
AFSCMEs political, legislative and fundraising arm and one of the
largest labor political action funds in the nation. It is financed entirely
by voluntary membership contributions.
Cox joined people in 1990 and especially looks to enroll new city employees.
The temps and the provisionals need to be exposed to how PEOPLE
works, how this union works. I let them know that by getting involved
theyll be part of a circle of people who are informed and can get
the help they need, she said.
Im proud to be part of DC 37 and involved in PEOPLE because
it affects members health, education, housing and quality of life
on so many levels, Cox added.
Members voluntary PEOPLE contributions help elect candidates in
state and federal elections, and help AFSCME lobby for support on issues
important to labor and working families such as pensions, job security,
Social Security and privatization. PEOPLE supports politicians who support
working people, regardless of party affiliation.
Also active in the DC 37 Womens Committee and her Concourse Village
community in the Bronx, Cox said, Im happy to be involved
in something productive. I believe thats my gift from God
to help others make their lives better and leave the world a better place.
DC 37 members can participate in PEOPLE by signing up for voluntary payroll
deductions. Members already enrolled in PEOPLE can increase their contributions.
A member who contributes $2 or more per pay period is automatically enrolled
in the VIP Club and receives a jacket and pin. The minimum voluntary contribution
is 50 cents per pay period.
To sign up for PEOPLE or learn more about the program, please call the
DC 37 PEOPLE office at 212-815-1578.
