Employee Press Forum: Feminization
of poverty The DC 37
Campus of the College of New Rochelle hosted the fourth forum of its Distinguished
Adjunct Faculty series Dec. 4. The forum Gender Politics and Identity: The
Changing Role of Women and the Feminization of Labor and Poverty, attracted
a full house of students and faculty, who took part in a lively discussion moderated
by Dr. Nibaldo Aguilera after the presentation.
The panelists addressed
a broad range of topics impacting women across the globe. Dr. Delrita Abercrombie
spoke about the important role that education plays in the empowerment and development
of women in the workplace. Professor M.A. Samad Matias discussed the nuances of
ethnicity, class and gender among the women of Africa. She also talked about the
controversial practice of genital mutilation.
Prof. Swapna Mathias presented
a paper on religion and the subversion of womens rights in India.
The
forums will continue during the spring semester. The idea for these forums
was born from our commitment to further expose our students to the critical issues
of our time, said Dr. Patrice Gouveia-Marks, DC 37 campus director. The
next forum takes place on April 23, at 6 p.m. and features a panel discussion
on the recession and solutions to the global crisis.
