Black History Month events at DC 37

The DC 37 Black History Committee announced that the union's 31st annual Black History Month celebration would open at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 1, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the first-floor galleria.

As its theme for 2012, the committee has decided to honor the historic presidency of Barak Obama and to build support for his re-election to a second term.

The committee will celebrate President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama throughout the month-long series of events that will move quickly from opening night to Finale Night on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Many locals will present programs during the month. For more information on Black History Month events at DC 37, please call your local leaders, check the schedule below or contact Committee Chair Deborah Pitts, the president of Local 1113, at 212-815-1113.

Electing an African American the 44th president of the United States in 2008 was a giant feat, and re-electing Obama may prove more challenging as the enemies of progress gear up to turn back the clock. In December, DC 37 and its parent union, the 1.6-million-member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, enthusiastically endorsed the president for re-election.

"Now we rank-and-file members have to do all we can to win for Obama in November," said Pitts.
