AFSCME and DC 37 back Obama's re-election
District Council 37 and its national union, the 1.6 million-member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, have endorsed President Barack Obama for re-election in November.
President Gerald W. McEntee announced AFSCME's endorsement Dec. 6 after the International Executive Board voted to support Obama's 2012 campaign, and the DC 37 Executive Board voted unanimously Dec. 14 to endorse the president.
DC37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts and President Eddie Rodriguez are members of the AFSCME board.
"President Obama is the only choice for the 99 percent," McEntee said. "We must put people back to work, make the 1 percent pay their fair share, and protect Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security."
"Obama is a proven fighter whose stand on economic, political and social issues demonstrates strong support for protecting the rights of working men and woman," said Roberts.
In 2008, AFSCME helped elect the nation's first African American president with a massive nationwide campaign involving some 40,000 volunteer activists and making over 6 million calls to members.
Obama's re-election is so important to public employees that AFSCME will commit $100 million to the campaign and "work day and night to ensure that this president gets a second term," McEntee said.
Roberts pledged that DC 37 would work closely with AFSCME to make sure Obama returns to the White House. "We will be mobilizing our members for a tough fight and using our experienced Green Machine field operation to get out the vote throughout the five boroughs," she said.
