The spirit of giving at DC 37

By DIANE S. WILLIAMS

DC37 made the holidays brighter for about 25 families in need this year and opened a Santa's workshop of games, toys and gifts for the members' children Dec. 8 at the annual Holiday Giving party.

"These are difficult times for our members and we just want them to know we still love them and we care," said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts. "The locals donate and the staff works very hard to make this a special occasion so your families don't go without for the holidays."

"Generosity and compassion for families in need is part of the union spirit," said Local 1455 President Mike DeMarco, who with activists from Locals 957, 1070, 1320 and 1549 spent weeks shopping for toys and games as other locals gave monetary donations. Santa's helpers from the Retirees Association distributed toys and refreshments.

Volunteer Social Workers from the union's Personal Services Unit and Municipal Employees Legal Services coordinated the program, recommending members who could most benefit. The members received supermarket gift cards and each youngster chose from a room full of presents; children under 12 also got a Toys "R" Us gift card.

"Our members are hard working, but they sometimes face financial difficulties. This special benefit helps members, especially single parents," MELS Social Worker Donna D'Andrea said.

Local 983 member Tadora Scope, a seasonal worker, said the union gifts will brighten Christmas for her daughter Ashanti, 9, who chose a computerized piano to help with her songwriting ambitions.

"I was worried how I would have Christmas for my kids. This helps a whole lot," said Local 372's Steven Simmons, who attended with his children, ages 9, 5 and 1.

"My board always approves helping this program so members can have a happier holiday," said Local 957 President Walthene Primus. "Board members Cora Casey and Theresa Jackson brought shopping bags full of toys."

Wonder-filled and awestruck, union children excitedly greeted DC 37's Kris Kringle, jolly Local 1320 President Jim Tucciarelli. "My son Jayden is six and loves Santa. He's been excited all week," said Local 420 member Melodie DePeiza. "This is great for the kids."
