An easy way to access the many great labor Web sites
is through DC 37's site at www.dc37.net.
There you will find up-to-date union news and information as well as links to
DC 37 locals and the wider labor web.
DC 37's links include the sites
of a dozen DC 37 local unions, DC 37's parent union, the American Federation of
State, County and Municipal Employees (www.afscme.org),
other AFSCME locals and other New York City unions.
For national labor
and political developments there is, of course, the AFL-CIO Web site (www.afl-cio.org).
Their recent coverage of the AFL-CIO convention, for instance, includes a stirring
video "call to action" by Jesse Jackson. Labornet (www.labornet.org)
is a leading independent source of breaking national and local labor news.
Global labor struggles
For international
labor news, try www.labourstart.org,
which posts news sources from throughout the world in a number of different languages.
If you're looking for information on labor struggles in such hot spots as South
Africa, India or Pakistan, this is the first place to go.
Labornet.org
also links to a worldwide family of labor networks.
Also useful for labor
and economic news are the numerous independent media sites that sprang up worldwide
after the Seattle protests against globalization. The New York City address, for
example, is www.nyc.indymedia.org.
These have been especially interesting during and after protests like the one
that greeted the recent World Economic Forum.
At these sites, you can
contribute your own stories, photographs, sound or video, which are posted immediately.
Working families, of course, do not live by bread alone. There are a number
of interesting sites on labor history and culture. The 1199 SEIU Bread and Roses
Cultural Project (www.bread-and-roses.com)
presents pictures, posters and slide shows of past and present exhibits and notices
of upcoming events.
The www.laborarts.org
site adds a historical dimension to this mix with buttons, cartoons, photographs,
leaflets, and even songbooks and sheet music.
You can purchase labor
cultural material, especially music and video, at the Labor Heritage Foundation
site (www.laborheritage.org)
and the Northland Poster Collective (www.northlandposter.com).
For a catalog of labor books for sale, try www.unionist.com
(Union Communication Services).
One of the most useful selections from
the DC 37 links section is "AFSCME
Laborlinks," which is one of the best lists of labor web sites available.
From here, you can go by subject listing to specialized sites on topics such as
safety and heath, privatization, bargaining, and women and the labor movement.
There are also sections on politics, which can lead to information about upcoming
legislation and how to contact your national legislators.
There are also
education sites for you and your children. For last month's Black History Month
celebration, the links offered an expanded section on "African-American Labor
History Links."
