New PEOPLE drive revs up for 2005

As unions face a second term under George W. Bush, the most anti-labor president in recent history, PEOPLE funds are more important than ever,” said DC 37 Political Action Director Wanda Williams.

Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality, the political action committee of AFSCME, DC 37’s parent union, is revving up its membership drive for 2005.

DC 37’s new PEOPLE Coordinator Sandra Murchison and local union coordinators have begun signing up as many members as possible. The campaign will culminate in a drawing with monetary prizes at the June 29 PEOPLE meeting.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in March, the new PEOPLE store will open at DC 37, selling promotional items like T-shirts, mugs and jackets. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4-7 p.m. on the ground floor.

PEOPLE will also sponsor a bus ride to Atlantic City May 6. Buses will leave from the union hall at 6:45 a.m. PEOPLE dollars help the union elect labor-friendly politicians and lobby on issues important to working families.

DC 37 members can help by giving to PEOPLE through payroll deductions, or increasing their contributions. PEOPLE supports politicians, regardless of party affiliation, who understand and side with public employees.

While union dues cannot be used to support political candidates, public employees can voluntarily contribute to the PEOPLE Program. A member who contributes $2 or more per pay period is automatically enrolled in the VIP Club and receives a jacket and pin. The minimum voluntary contribution is 50 cents per pay period.
