Union committees need you in 2005

Many DC 37 members have been participating actively in the union’s array of issue-based and ethnic heritage committees, and the committees have made important contributions to the solidarity and success of DC 37 as an institution.

From the groups that celebrate members’ diverse cultural backgrounds to those that bring together advocates for concerns such as working women’s needs and immigrants’ problems, 2004 was a banner year for committee events and activities.

“But we are looking for even greater involvement in 2005,” said Program Director Frances M. Curtis. “Working on a union committee can be fun, and it’s a great opportunity to meet folks from other locals and contribute to the whole union as well as the group you join.”

Committees usually meet after work to make it easier to attend. A complete list of DC 37 committees is below.

Ms. Curtis works closely with many of the committees to help them achieve their goals. All the cultural committees are open to members who want to participate, she said, as are the Citizenship, Civil Service, Disability, Health, Housing, LAGIC, Professional and Women’s committees.

If you are interested in getting involved with one of these committees, please call her office at 212-815-1502.

Members of the constitutional committees — which have specific functions in the governing structure of the union — are appointed by the president of DC 37 with the approval of the Executive Board and the Delegates Council, she pointed out. Locals select their representatives on the Political Action Committee and some other standing committees.
