Looking for a decent,
affordable apartment? Apply now for new Section
8 Housing Vouchers For the first time since
1994, the New York City Housing Authority has opened up its waiting list and is
accepting new applications for Section 8 housing vouchers, because 22,000 new
vouchers will become available in New York City in 2007 and 2008. This
federally-subsidized program makes private rental housing actually affordable
to low and moderate income families. This may be your chance to qualify for decent,
affordable housing. If you receive a Section 8 voucher, you and your
family will be able to live in any neighborhood in the city in a building whose
owner accepts the voucher. You will pay 30 percent of your household income toward
the federally-approved market rent, with NYCHA paying the balance to the landlord.
To be eligible for the program, your income must be no higher than certain
limits, which vary with the size of your family. A family of four qualifies if
its income is less than $35,450. The limits range from a maximum of $24,800 for
a single person up to $52,450 for a family of 10. You can get an application
form at any NYCHA Borough Office or any NYCHA Management Office. For their addresses,
go to NYCHAs Web site at www.nyc.gov/nycha,
call 311, or call DC 37s Political Action and Legislation office at 212-815-1550.
Applications will be officially accepted for three months, beginning Feb.
12 and postmarked no later than May 14. All applications must be mailed (not delivered)
to New York City Housing Authority, Post Office Box 445, Church Street Station,
New York, NY 10008-0445. If you need affordable housing and are income-eligible,
the DC 37 Political Action Dept. urges you to apply for one of these new Section
8 housing vouchers. | |
