Roberts is elected co-chair of MLC

DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts was elected Dec. 10 to the second-highest post of the Municipal Labor Committee, the umbrella organization of municipal unions.

She received the unanimous support of the municipal labor leaders to become the MLC’s co-chair.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew was elected to Roberts’s previous position as MLC executive vice chair.

Harry Nespoli of the sanitation workers union heads the MLC, which includes unions representing more than 300,000 city workers. The MLC reaches agreements with the city on benefits and speaks out on budgetary issues. The MLC has two agency subcommittees, one including unions with members in the Health and Hospitals Corp. and its new Dept. of Education Subcommittee, which is battling proposed cuts in school funding and examining the waste in DOE’s contracting out.

“It’s an honor to have the backing of my peers for this new position,” Roberts said. “It’s also a testament to DC 37’s leading role in providing a voice for municipal employees in these tough times.”

Three DC 37 leaders serve as vice chairs of the MLC Steering Committee: DC 37 and Local 372 President Veronica Montgomery-Costa, Treasurer Maf Misbah Uddin, who is president of Accountants, Actuaries and Statisticians Local 1407, and Faye Moore, president of Social Service Employees Union Local 371.
