200 Local 1407 members prep for exam
Local 1407 President Maf Misbah Uddin greeted members who
are taking a prep course for the Associate Management Auditor civil service
test.
On March 8, Uddin, who is also treasurer of District Council 37, discussed
the locals commitment to career advancement at the opening session
at Norman Thomas High School at 111 East 33rd St. in Manhattan. Over 200
members signed up for the course, which the local is sponsoring with the
DC 37 Education Fund. The class will have eight, 2 ½-hour sessions.
Local 1407 pressured the Dept. of City-wide Administrative Services to
schedule the promotional and open competitive exam, which will be given
April 29. It is the first time in 17 years that the city is holding an
Associate Management Auditor exam.
Professional development is a priority of our membership, so we
are anxious to do whatever we can, whether it is pushing for civil service
tests or sponsoring classes, to help people move up the career ladder,
Uddin said.
To encourage professional development, Local 1407 decided in 2004 to reimburse
members for their exam fee if they pass their test for a title represented
by the local.
During the last two years, nearly 500 members with provisional civil service
status have become permanent employees by taking exams that the local
pushed for. Last year, the local took legal action to ensure that the
city appointed people from six civil service lists.
