Library group lauds Local 1482s Eileen
Muller
The nations top library association has honored Local
1482 President Eileen Muller for fighting to win higher pay for workers
at the Brooklyn Public Library.
I am really very excited about this, said Muller about the
American Library Associations decision to recognize her at the groups
convention in June.
Muller will receive an honorable mention for the American Library Association-Allied
Professional Associations award for outstanding achievement in promoting
higher salaries and status for library workers. The ALA-APA is an affiliate
of the American Library Association that is devoted to promoting better
pay and recognition for library workers.
I have been involved in Local 1482 for a long time as a proponent
of better salaries, beginning under my predecessor Marlene Rosenberg,
and continuing up until this day, said Muller, who was elected to
her first term as president in 2002.
Since her election, Muller and the locals rep, Audrey McConney,
have worked with the DC 37 Research and Negotiations Dept. to convince
library management about the need for upgrades and salary increases.
In 2003, about 300 Librarians received upgrades. A year later, dozens
of clerical workers earned promotions to new job titles, Branch Operations
Specialists and Technology Resource Specialist.
Last fall, 20 Junior Library Custodians were promoted to Assistant Library
Custodians positions. Brooklyn Library Guild Local 1482 continues to push
for additional upgrades for the custodial staff.
National Library Workers Day
April 4 is National Library Workers Day.
To celebrate the occasion, DC 37s national union, the American Federation
of State, County and Municipal Employees, distributed buttons and bookmarks
to council and local unions that represent library workers.
