Action 2009 DC 37 backs Rubén Díaz
Jr. for Bronx Boro Prez in April 21 vote
In the
April 21 special election for Bronx Borough President, District Council 37 has
endorsed New York State Assembly member Ruben Diaz Jr., a strong advocate for
the needs of working-class families, the poor and the middle class.
Diaz
was recommended by the unions Political Screening Committee, approved by
the Executive Board and endorsed March 24 by an overwhelming vote of the Delegates
Council.
The union is urging members to volunteer to help Diaz win the
election; if you would like to help, please return the coupon in the April issue
of the Public Employee Press.
A lifelong resident of the Bronx, Diaz became
one of the youngest members of the Assembly when he took office in January 1997.
Now a seasoned legislator, he has worked steadily to advance the economic and
social development of the Bronx.
His goals include steering stimulus funds
toward job creation, improving education, rehabilitating the environment and protecting
the health care sector, a major employer in the Bronx.
Diaz will probably
face a Republican challenger in the special election to fill the rest of the term
of Adolfo Carrion, who has been named director of the White House Office of Urban
Policy. If Diaz wins on April 21 and wants to remain as borough president, he
will have to run again in the September primary and the November general election. | |
