The deadline is rapidly approaching to apply for AFSCME’s 2010 Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded to two students who are currently college sophomores majoring in the social sciences and interested in pursuing a career in political activism.

The winners will each receive $5,000 per year for their junior and senior years of study, as well as an opportunity to intern with the Political Action Dept. of DC 37’s national union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Students who apply must meet the following criteria:

  • be a child or financially dependent grandchild of an AFSCME member;
  • have a grade point average of 2.5 or better;
  • be in their sophomore year of study;
  • be a social science major (such as political science, sociology, ethnic studies, communications) at an accredited college or university; and
  • demonstrate a commitment to social justice and political activism.

For a copy of the application, requests should be mailed to: Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship, c/o AFSCME Education Dept., 1625 L Street, NW, Washington, D.C., 20036 or e-mail education@afscme.org. Applications can be also downloaded from the AFSCME Web site at www.afscme.org.

Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30. Winners will be announced by August 1.

The scholarship was established in 1990 in honor of former AFSCME Political Action Director Jerry Clark, who was deeply committed to progressive social and economic ideals.
