Employee Press April 30 deadline
for $5,000 social justice scholarship The deadline is rapidly
approaching to apply for AFSCMEs 2010 Jerry Clark Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded to two students who are currently college
sophomores majoring in the social sciences and interested in pursuing a career
in political activism. The winners will each receive $5,000 per year
for their junior and senior years of study, as well as an opportunity to intern
with the Political Action Dept. of DC 37s national union, the American Federation
of State, County and Municipal Employees. Students who apply must meet
the following criteria: - be a child or financially dependent
grandchild of an AFSCME member;
- have a grade point average
of 2.5 or better;
- be in their sophomore year of study;
- be
a social science major (such as political science, sociology, ethnic studies,
communications) at an accredited college or university; and
- demonstrate
a commitment to social justice and political activism.

Applications can be also downloaded from the AFSCME Web site at www.afscme.org.
Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30. Winners will be announced
by August 1. The scholarship was established in 1990 in honor of former
AFSCME Political Action Director Jerry Clark, who was deeply committed to progressive
social and economic ideals.
