Union backs Glick, Niou for state Assembly

Yuh-Line Niou, the chief of staff for Queens Assembly member Ron Kim, has been endorsed by DC 37 in her bid to represent the 65th Assembly District, which covers Lower Manhattan.

Niou has worked for Kim, who represents Flushing in Albany, for the past three years. DC 37 delegates, the union's highest decision-making body, made the endorsement during their monthly meeting on March 29.

Niou is running in a special election on April 19 to fill a vacancy in the 65th District, which opened up as a result of the conviction of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on corruption charges. The 65th District includes Chinatown, the Lower East Side and Battery Park City.

Niou also has the endorsement of former City Comptroller John Liu, state Sen. Brad Hoylman and City Comptroller Scott Springer. "She has the experience we need in Albany and will be a catalyst for good government and transparency," Springer said.

DC 37 delegates also endorsed Assembly member Deborah J. Glick to retain her seat representing the 66th Assembly District.

Glick has served 13 terms in Albany. She has championed the rights of tenants, reproductive rights for women and authored legislation to improve mass transit by providing better access for the handicapped people who use the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
