Public Employee Press Snapshots Edited by Alfredo Alvarado PEP photographer featured in show Whose Streets? Our Streets! at the Bronx Documentary Center exhibits the work of Clarence Elie-Rivera, DC 37's staff photographer and videographer and other artists who captured on film New York City during the 1980s and ’90s. "These were some of the first pictures of mine to be published, in the 'Arm the Masses' newspaper," said Elie-Rivera. His black and white photos of the December 12th Movement grassroots action to save the Audubon Ballroom document their protests against Columbia University's Harlem land grab. They stopped Columbia's plans to demolish the site where Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965. "This is a vital part of New York City's history," said Elie-Rivera. "The show is timely given the current national political situation. The images prove that taking it to the streets has an impact." Whose Streets? closed March 5 but can be viewed at www.whosestreets.photo/index.html. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
