Employee Press Union Scrapbook Ruth
Levine, former local prez Ruth Levine, who rose through the union ranks
to become the president of Health Services Employees Local 768, passed away March
7 in New York City, after a long illness.
A native New Yorker born in the
Bronx, Levine began her career with the city as a Dental Hygienist. After two
years on the job she became active in the union and served as a shop steward,
a Local 768 delegate to DC 37 and a grievance rep. Local 768 members elected Levine
president in 1983, and she was elected as a vice president of DC 37 in June 1984.
Levine
also earned a bachelors degree in labor studies from the Empire State Labor
College.
She was a marvelous president, said Ruth Weiner, who
worked for DC 37s Ed Fund and was secretary of Local 768. She really
loved what she was doing. Weiner was at her friends side in the hospital
when she passed away.
Her priority was always the members,
said José Sierra, who worked with Levine as a council rep and today is
director of the DC 37 Blue Collar Division. She was a hands-on president
who demanded that staff follow through on grievances. Im grateful for having
worked under her because she made me what I am today. | |
