J. Bruce Maffeo named ethical practices officer

J. Bruce Maffeo, DC 37’s new Ethical Practices Officer, was introduced to the Executive Board May 10 by Ethical Practices Committee Chair Cliff Koppelman.

“This position is extremely important to ensure accountability for ethical conduct by our officials and managerial staff,” said Executive Director Lillian Roberts. “Mr. Maffeo has had a distinguished career and has an excellent legal reputation.”

Under the DC 37 constitution, the job of the Ethical Practices Officer includes investigating charges of violations of the Ethical Practices Code and initiating an investigation upon reasonable suspicion of a violation.

Mr. Maffeo was a trial attorney with the Organized Crime Section of the U.S. Justice Dept. before he began private practice. He represents individuals and organizations in state and federal courts and has handled cases involving public corruption, fraud and tax evasion.

Koppelman, who is also secretary of DC 37 and president of Local 1070, said the selection process took longer than anticipated because there were over 100 applications.

Maffeo received a unanimous vote from the committee, which in addition to Koppelman includes local presidents Lenny Allen (2021), Eileen Muller (1482), Eddie Rodriguez (1549) and Ralph Carbone (1359).
