DC 37 supports Morshed Alam in Queens primary

On the recommendation of the union’s Screening Committee and Executive Board, the DC 37 Delegates Council voted unanimously April 25 to endorse Morshed Alam in the Sept. 12 Democratic Primary for State Assembly.

Alam is a member of Civil Service Technical Guild Local 375 and a candidate in District 25 in Queens, representing Whitestone, Flushing, Fresh Meadow and parts of Jamaica and Richmond Hill.

“Labor leader Brian McLaughlin represented the community well, and I believe another union person for our district would help working families.”Alam said.

An Environmental Scientist, Alam is a former Local 375 chapter president at the Dept. of Environmental Protection. Alam is president of the New Americans Democratic Organization of New York, a 400-member lobbying group formed to protect the rights of new citizens. He served twice as a local school board member and is a commissioner of the New York City Voter Assistance Commission. In 1998 he ran for state Senate against incumbent Sen. Frank Padavan, receiving 42 percent of the vote.

“DC 37’s endorsement is a priceless contribution to my campaign,” Alam said. “DC 37 cares about its members and gave me preference as one of their own. My campaign, the community and I especially appreciate the help we are getting from Lillian Roberts, Wanda Williams, the Executive Board and union as a whole.”
