Uddin named to Asian Pacific Alliance board

The president of DC 37’s national union has nominated DC 37 Treasurer and Local 1407 President Maf Misbah Uddin to serve on the executive board of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance.

Gerald W. McEntee, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said that as AFSCME’s representative on the board, Uddin “will continue to be an asset to the important work being conducted by APALA,” organized labor’s nationwide advocacy group for Asian workers.

“I feel great,” Uddin said about the nomination, which is expected to be approved at APALA’s convention in Washington, D.C., July 19-22.

“We will continue to play an important role in organizing workers, with a particular focus on Asians and other immigrant workers,” said Uddin, who was born in Bangladesh.

At APALA’s 2005 convention in Las Vegas, Uddin was elected as an at-large executive board member, as was Ahmed Shakir, Local 375’s secretary. This year, the New York City APALA chapter has nominated Shakir for an executive board seat.
