Joe Puleo elected to Executive Board

Local 983 President Joseph Puleo was elected without opposition as a vice president on the DC 37 Executive Board April 22 by the union's delegates. He replaces former 1219 President Shirley Williams, who retired earlier this year.

DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts congratulated Puleo, who joined the union's officers at the podium, where Debbie Lane, chair of the DC 37 Election Committee, administered the oath of office. Puleo thanked the delegates for their support.

"We have a long list of tasks ahead of us," Puleo told PEP, as he described the challenges that face the executive board. He said his first priority will be working hard to help the union win a new contract. The Executive Board is composed of 26 members from union locals and the Retirees Association and DC 37's top four elected officers.

Puleo, 48, joined the city workforce 25 years ago as a Sanitation Enforcement Agent and joined Local 983 in 1992 when he became an Urban Parks Ranger.

In 1998, Puleo was elected Local 983 vice president, and he served five terms before he won the presidency of the local in 2013. He chairs the DC 37 Parks Policy Committee and served for several years as a Sgt.-at-Arms and a member of the DC 37 Elections Committee.

Local 983 has 3,100 members and represents Urban Parks Rangers and Associate UPRs, Traffic Enforcement Agents Levels 3 and 4, Motor Vehicle Operators, High Pressure Plant Tenders, City Seasonal Aides, Associate Parks Service Workers, Asbestos Handlers and Assistant City Highway Repairers. As a local vice president, Puleo's responsibilities included representing members at the Parks and Transportation departments and overseeing the local's political activities.
