Local 1321mobilizes

Activists in Queens Library Guild Local 1321 turned out for a series of grassroots demonstrations urging the City Council to add $65 million for operations and $1.1 billion for a 10-year capital plan in next year's budget for the city's three public library systems. In the accompanying photo, Local 1321 members gathered with community supporters at an April 4 rally at the Corona, Queens, branch library. Local 1321 scheduled other rallies at the Hollis, Richmond Hill, Broadway, Lefferts, Laurelton and Woodside branches in May and June.

Invited speakers included DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido, New York City Council Deputy Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, chair of the City Council's Cultural Affairs Committee, and Costa Constantinides, chair of the council's subcommittee on libraries.
