Comptroller honors Uddin

The office of the Comptroller honored DC 37 Treasurer and Local 1407 President Maf Misbah Uddin at its Asian American & Pacific Island Heritage Month celebration on May 5.

"I am proud to recognize Maf Misbah Uddin for his outstanding work to expand opportunities for South Asian Americans in New York," Comptroller Scott M. Stringer said at the event, held at the Surrogate's Courthouse at 31 Chambers St. in downtown Manhattan.

"He is dedicated to increasing public understanding of South Asian American concerns and has made remarkable efforts to energize and empower workers in New York City," he said. Apart from his positions at DC 37, Uddin is the founder and president of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor. The alliance has increased the political involvement and strength of South Asian workers in the United States and has helped expose the exploitative and hazardous working conditions of factory workers in Bangladesh. Uddin also serves on the board of the AFL-CIO's Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance. Regarding Uddin, Stringer said, "He has served with distinction for more than a decade at DC 37 and has contributed greatly to civic life in New York City through his work as an actuary, treasurer and outspoken advocate for social justice and human rights."
