Bronx borough president honors leaders

DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido and Local 371 Delegate Aurea Mangual were among several union leaders honored at the annual Bronx Week Labor breakfast.

Sponsored by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., the event occurred May 14 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in the Bronx County Building and showcased the contributions of the honorees to the labor movement and the Bronx community.

The other union honorees included Norman Seabrook, president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, Vincent Alvarez, president of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and Mario Cilento, president of the New York State AFL-CIO.

"I am a strong support of the municipal unions, and I am delighted to be recognizing one of the great Latino labor leaders, Henry Garrido, the new executive director of DC 37, AFSCME," Diaz said.

Diaz spoke warmly of Mangual, a staffer at the Bronx Borough President's Office, who will retire later this year, and noted that she has dedicated decades of her life to improving the lives of Bronx residents.
