MELS celebrates Law Day

The Municipal Employees Legal Services, (MELS), celebrated the hard work and dedication of its legal staff on May 5, at its annual Law Day event. DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido acknowledged the tremendous impact that MELS has on the lives of members who would otherwise not be able to afford legal assistance. "I call MELS the great equalizer, our secret weapon." Garrido said at the afternoon celebration. "Members know that this service means that we have their back."

Willie Chang, the newly appointed administrator of the Health and Security Plan also commended the staff for their dedication and said that he looked forward to working together with MELS.

MELS worked closely with the Coalition to Stop Credit Card Checks in Employment and celebrated a victory in April when, after a three-year battle the City Council voted for a ban on the discriminatory practice.
