The lies of Donald Trump

"The Mexican government forces many bad people into our country."

There's a thing called free will.

"You have to be a citizen to vote," but with same-day voter registration, "you have places where people just walk in and vote."

Voter eligibility gets checked.

"We're the highest taxed nation in the world."

A repeatedly debunked claim.

Says Ted Cruz's father "was with Lee Harvey Oswald" before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Expert: "Outlandish at best."

A Trump television ad shows Mexicans swarming over "our southern border."

Footage isn't from U.S. Mexico border; it's from Morocco.

"Frankly, (Hillary Clinton) doesn't do very well with women."

Clinton leads Trump among women by historic margins.

The unemployment rate may be as high as "42 percent."

That figure is way off the charts.

"My numbers are better right now than Ronald Reagan's numbers were with Jimmy Carter."

Trump is in a worse spot than Reagan was.

Says Hillary Clinton "wants to abolish the Second Amendment."

This claim misses the mark.

Says crime statistics show blacks kill 81 percent of white homicide victims.

Totally wrong stats.

Says professional football coach Rex Ryan "won championships in New York. The AFC, I think, twice."

Ryan's career record: 58-61.

"We (Trump University) have an 'A' from the Better Business Bureau."

This claim doesn't get a passing grade.

Says his plan would cut taxes without increasing the deficit.

Spending cuts would have to be huuuuuuge.

The Islamic State "just built a hotel in Syria."

Trump's worried about competition.

"I watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering" as the World Trade Center collapsed.

No one remembers this but Trump.

After the U.S.-led military alliance ejected Saddam Hussein's forces from Kuwait in 1991, the Kuwaitis "never paid us."

Kuwait paid $16 billion in war costs, the U.S. paid $7 billion.

Says Ted Cruz "said I was in favor in Libya. I never discussed that subject."

He discussed it on his own blog.

Says Mexico doesn't have birthright citizenship, and Americans are the "only ones" to have it.

Mexico has it, plus 31 more countries.

The Politifact.com ratings system:

PolitiFact.com was founded by then journalist, and now Duke University professor Bill Adair. PolitiFact.com is a project of the Tampa Bay Times, where reporters and editors from the newspaper and other media sources fact-check statements by politicians, lobbyists, other public figures, issuing ratings on the veracity of each statement or claim. For their work during the 2008 presidential campaign, the site won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize.
