The New World Of Work
DC 37 Communications wins several press, video awards

By GREGORY N. HEIRES

District Council 37 won several awards in the Metro NY Labor Communications Council's 2016 contest.

Metro announced the awards at its 41st annual convention, held May 6 at the headquarters of American Federation of Musicians Local 802.

The union's official publication, Public Employee Press, received six awards. The awards were for work in 2015.

Associate Editor Diane S. Williams received first place for unique performance for a series about members who worked in Africa combating the Ebola crisis. Williams also won third place in best news writing for her article "Health Dept. hires 37 for the city's rat war."

Lorraine Barcant, chair of the Local 375 Next Wave Committee, received a second place award for her op-ed, "Building the next wave of the labor movement," about the aspirations of the new generation of DC 37 members and their vision of the union's future.

Sr. Associate Editor Gregory N. Heires won second place for his coverage of a union campaign in 2015 that resulted in $43 million in additional funding for the city's three public library systems.

Managing Editor Mike Lee won 2nd place in the feature/historical category for his article about the 1965 welfare workers strike, "The strike that transformed public sector unionism." Public Employee Press itself won 3rd place for general excellence.

The DC 37 Communications Dept. won 3rd place for best video.

Director of Strategic Initiatives Chris Policano, Photographer Clarence Elie-Rivera, Editorial Assistant Joe Lopez and Assistant Director Rudy Orozco worked on the video, "PEP Officers protect Battery Park City."

DC 37 competed in the contests' Class B category, which is for unions with more than 25,000 members.

"We are thrilled that our staffers received recognition for their dedication to sharing the story of the union and its members," Policano said. "Everyone in our office is passionate about covering the work of the 100,000 public service workers in DC 37."
