3 EMS workers injured in fatal fire

Three Local 2507 members were among the more than 50 rescue workers hurt June 17 in the Father’s Day fire that took the lives of three Firefighters.

Emergency Medical Technicians Thomas McQuoid, Robert Hynes and Rafael Iglesia were hurt when the Long Island General Supply Co. hardware store on Astoria Boulevard in Queens exploded.

They were taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where they were treated and released.

“This was a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the families of the workers who died and were injured in the blast,” said Patrick J. Bahnken, president of Emergency Medical Service Employees Local 2507.

“Even though we are well aware of the risks when we decide to enter our profession, you can never get used to the personal tragedies associated with rescue work,” Mr. Bahnken said.
